Director General of the Commission's Transport and Energy directorate, Matthias Ruete, has declared that Europe's ability to avoid climate change is dependant not only on renewables, but also depends on nuclear energy and carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology.

Is nuclear and CCS an essential part of the climate change strategy or does it distract from the need to invest renewable technology research and diffusion?

I think it is a distraction- nuclear leaves a legacy of hazardous waste that we still have no idea what we will do with in the future (and it seems to be too much of a risk to just assume that a solution will turn up later) and CCS is just not a developed enough technology yet. Renewables on the other hand (together with efficiency measures) provide a safe, clean and sustainable alternative to the large scale emmision of CO2 that is the current situation.
On an aside I didn't really want to give Google all my details to create an account but I did so that I could post on here- it's a shame I couldn't just register on your site (which I like better than Google!)
Hi Jo,
My counterpoint / rant against the UK 'emissions reduction strategy' should be up soon. Sorry about the blog situation, will put it on the list of things to be discussed.
Thanks for visiting, come back soon!
